Chris Mooney著「The Republican War on Science」に詳しいように、現ブッシュ政権では適切な科学政策がなされているとは言いがたく、多くの科学者は危機感をいだいています。

サイエンスの正当性は”民主的判断をくだす仕掛け(apparatus of democratic adjudication)”によって保証されている.....権力の地位にある者は自分が正しいと信じ込み、”不都合な真実(inconvenience opposition)”を隠そうとする。しかし、サイエンスをフェアーに執行するためには、真実がどんなに醜いものであれ白日のもとにさらさなければならない(You try to set up the game of science so that the truth will out despite this ugly side of human nature).

科学者は2008年の大統領選に大きな期待を寄せているのですが、現在までの米国大統領候補者のディベートでは（地球温暖化の一部を除いて）科学政策は議論されてきませんでした。黙っていては”理系は”軽視されるばかり。業を煮やした科学者達は”科学政策に特化した大統領候補間ディベート”の開催を要求すべくグラスルーツ運動ScienceDebate2008を開始しました。

ノーベル賞受賞者でカリフォルニア工科大前総長David Baltimoreやサイエンス紙編集長Donald Kennedyをはじめそうそうたるメンバーが署名しサポートを表明しています。環境、医学、科学＆技術（下記）の分野でのディベートをとおしてサイエンスリテラシーのあるリーダーを選び、科学の振興（ブッシュ時代から考えると復権）と適正な予算配分を期待するものです。

この署名運動はインターネットを使って素早く広がっている模様です。ScienceDebate2008が実現することを強く願っています（私も署名しました）。
